Friends of Elementary Arts, Inc. was formed in response to state and local public education budget cuts that reduced the elementary art and music programs by 50% for the 2008-2009 school year. The Fund’s seven member advisory board is comprised of individuals from the Gainesville community and represents a cross-section of expertise in the following areas: Arts Education, Law, Accounting, Local Business, and Parents. The Fund is under the auspices of The Community Foundation of North Central Florida, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization.
What about the 1-mil increase?
As the result of a majority vote to increase the tax rate by one mil, the elementary art and music programs were successfully reinstated to full-time status in all twenty-five public elementary schools at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year.
Money directly to Art and Music teachers
Friends of Elementary Arts, Inc. board made the decision to distribute a total of $50,000 from donated monies to every Alachua County elementary public school art and music programs for the 2009-2010 school year. The board felt that it was the intention of donors to ensure that these programs be returned their former academic status. As a result, each school received $1000 for the art program and $1000 for the music program. This money went directly into the art and music teacher budgets at each school.
Expenditure of Funds
All expenditures of these funds were required to comply with the Florida Sunshine State Standards for art and music and all enhancement money purchases were designated to remain at the individual schools. The School Board of Alachua County Fine Arts Supervisor and Fund liaison developed a time line for implementation and worked closely with the art and music teachers as they made funding decisions.
Why We Continue to Raise Funds
The purpose of this fund is to promote and enhance quality elementary art and music education programs not covered by tax dollars, in all Alachua County public elementary schools. Two goals have been identified to secure the necessary funding.
During the 2012-2013 school year, $5000, in grant monies will be made available to provide bus transportation to the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art for 5th grade students. These docent-led tours of the museum are based on an annual curriculum guide co-authored by Alachua County public school elementary art teachers and the Harn Museum of Art educational staff. An art show of work done by the students and based on this curriculum is an annual spring event hosted at the Museum.
Annual Support for these programs is achieved through our Musical Chairs Project fundraiser.
Our goal is to continue to build the endowment to ensure that the public school elementary art and music programs are supported in perpetuity. Donor support from individuals, local arts organizations and businesses will make this possible.
